Reiki comes from the Japanese words Rei, meaning higher power, and Ki, which means life energy.
It is a Japanese technique that promotes Healing.
It consists of a method of “laying on hands”, which is associated with special symbols and mantras. As it is a method of self-healing, everyone can receive “attunements” from a Reiki Master in order to tap into Life Energy.
It brings relaxation, peace, pain relief, and relief from anxiety and fear. There must be a pure Intention, a sincere compassion and a real motivation to practice Reiki. It’s better to be Reiki than to do Reiki! It isn’t a Religion as it has no dogma, but it is important to live in harmony with others and act according to the principles of Reiki. Even though it has been adapted to the Western world, it is important to keep in mind its ethics and the spiritual intent of Mikao Usui (1865-1926), the creator of Reiki. There were other styles of Reiki healing practiced in Japan before him, but he is the one who developed the Reiki symbols and the Reiki practices as we know them today. It is Hawaya Takata (1900-1980) who brought Reiki to the West. She changed and developed the procedures and the symbols of Reiki to make it simpler and more powerful. The Reiki practitioners are not Shamans, they bring energy to the patient who participate in the healing process.
The principles of Reiki:
The secret art of inviting happiness. The miraculous medicine of all diseases. Just for today, do not anger. Do not worry and be filled with gratitude. Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people. Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer. Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth. Use Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind. Usui Mikao, Founder
Reiki promotes patience, love of oneself and others, and non-competitiveness. It makes us more tolerant and helps us to be non-judgmental. It empowers forgiveness, develops gratitude and improves joy and peace within ourselves.
Reiki is no acting.
Reiki is no thinking.
Reiki is no expectation.
Reiki is no attachment.
It is a ‘here and now’ practice, emphasizing an openness to others and an attitude of letting go. The energy will go where it is needed. When you give Reiki, you benefit from the healing as well, you don’t need to ‘clean’ anything negative, as you would with other kinds of energy treatments. Energy is endless and Reiki is unconditional love, a simple way to heal ourselves and others. It is not only a healing process, but a way of living, a way of being. There is a spiritual dimension in Reiki and meditation can be a tool to help creating emptiness and peacefulness. A Reiki Master teaches the technique of Reiki using sacred symbols and mantras, ‘attunements’ are given to achieve the 3 different levels to become a Reiki Master, with love, light and peace.
